2006 Alumnus Joseph Bush Teaches Students About Veterans Day

DSC_0143Highlands Latin School’s new Southern Indiana campus commemorated Veterans Day in a unique way this year. On Tuesday, November 6, HLS graduate and veteran Joseph Bush spoke to the students about the significance of Veterans Day and led them in placing American flags on the graves of veterans.

Captain Joseph Bush is the company commander for Company B, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines in Terre Haute, Indiana. He began attending Highlands in tenth grade and graduated in 2006. After graduation, Bush attended Vanderbilt University, where he completed the Navy ROTC program. He graduated from Vanderbilt in 2010 and was commissioned as an officer in the Marines.

“Highlands taught me to love learning,” Capt. Bush said about his time at HLS. Capt. Bush’s wife also attended Highlands, and the two are continuing their relationship with the HLS family as parents of a student at the Southern Indiana campus. “We both had such a great experience,” Capt. Bush said when asked what led them to enroll their son at HLS.

During his presentation, Capt. Bush explained what the military is and what it means to be a veteran. He also discussed the five branches of the military and answered students’ questions. After his talk, Capt. Bush joined HLS students, parents, and faculty across the street at the New Albany National Cemetery as they placed 500 American flags on the graves of veterans.

Southern Indiana campus teacher Krista Lange commented about the event, “It was very meaningful that one of our parents, who is an HLS alumnus and Marine, could speak to the students about Veterans Day and then accompany the students, families, and teachers to the cemetery to place flags. I hope this can be the start of a special tradition for our campus.”
